Although not the largest airport it is now one of the busiest, flying around 10 million passengers a year, to mostly European destinations. The airport is familiar to many TV viewers from its participation in the series of programmes about the trials and tribulations of a day at an airport. The programme featured Luton, filming and documenting the day to day activities of a number of the staff. The airport officially opened for business in 1938 but 12 months later Great Britain was at war. During the war years the airport was able to maintain commercial activities as well as providing the base for 264 Fighter Squadron. The aerodrome also provided site facilities for aircraft construction including the Mosquito fighter bomber. Following the war the airport returned to civilian and commercial use and continued to grow as it took full advantage of the boom, of the '50s and '60s, in 'package holidays' as more and more people came to look upon a foreign holiday as the norm rather than the unattainable. Luton became one of the UK's most profitable airports as charter airlines made the airport their base. Despite some setbacks in the travel industry, with the resultant knock-on effect on Luton Airport, the airport was considered to be an important part of London's network of airports and, as a consequence, a new terminal building with a capacity for 5 million passengers a year, was opened in 1985. The early 1990s saw more financial setbacks but investment in improving all aspects of the airport's operations was put in place. The late 1990s saw a turn-around in the airport's fortunes as it entered the market for basic, budget flights and became the first UK base for easyJet. As the airport flourished it became apparent that improvements and greater passenger capacity were needed and in 1999 a new terminal building was amongst the new developments. Also in 1999 access to the airport was improved as the London Luton Airport Parkway Station was opened for rail passengers, with shuttle buses ferrying them the final mile to the airport. This meant that passengers could travel between the airport and Central London within the hour. As business boomed the need for more and better facilities was ever present and, in 2005, the airport opened its latest Passenger Terminal with everything the travellers might need, from somewhere to sit, to access the internet, to get food and drink, to buy last minute items, to buy newspapers, magazines and books.
